Soil is a valuable resource ever since land creatures have come into existence, most of the plant life, trillions of microbial forms of life, many animals, and humans live on soil.  

Why Save Soil ?

Zillions of life forms live on the soil, the food we eat is grown due to the presence of soil. Here minerals and many organic contents are the once that help sustain life , but if these organic contents are lost from the soil it would turn into sand. 


Sources state that around 52% of the total soil that is on the earth has already degraded and the nutrient levels in the soil has reduced by about 90 % from what was there in 1920’s .

Indian Space Research Organization states that "Globally around 24 billion tons of fertile soil and 27,000 bio-species are lost each year"


Therefore, in future when the population rises any food crisis will be devastating.


We must take a Holistic solution   


Some solutions for protecting the soil resource :

  • The top-most 12 –15 inches of most valuable soil contain the very basis of life 'the microbial life', these microbes sustain in the soil when there is sufficient moisture. Organic matter that makeup the organic content intended to be present in the soil helps in increasing the water holding capacity by up to 90 % 
  • The source of soil organic matter is photosynthesis which means the more the number of plants the more there will be the water holding capacity and less will the soil degrade. 
  • Therefore, Afforestation can help deal with the problem of soil degradation.      
  • Some other methods of sustaining soil are rain water harvesting measures since these increase the water table beneath the soil and keep the soil wet, fit for sustaining plant growth and microbial life  

Sustainable development needs to take place and each one of us should understand the need for protecting the soil from degradation and protect it for future generations.
